This article from the Guardian highlights two separate owners of an identical VW Passat GTE who both experienced problems related to the hybrid systems. In both cases, VW refused to shoulder the cost of the very expensive repairs based on the fact that their respective 3 year warranty’s had expired. In both cases the warranty had literally JUST expired, too. Ouch. Thankfully the Guardian was able to contact VW to rectify the situation leading to a satisfactory conclusion.
The take-away from this story is the importance of ensuring you get a long warranty should you be tempted to purchase a used hybrid or EV. VW’s current 3-year warranty just isn’t long enough – hybrids and EVs are extremely complex and are therefore very expensive to repair. Caveat emptor…
